"Did you come to say goodbye to Big Mama?" -Emma Kate (4)

The singer forgot the words to Amazing Grace; the preacher got all of his facts confused... but the whole family was there. All three of Uncle Fred's wives showed, cousins I haven't seen in ages, new cousins I'd never seen at all... 6 children, 20 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and a dozen great great grandchildren.

And nobody left the cemetary until the grave was covered.

The funeral director must have dismissed us six times. He tried to get us to leave after the service, asked us to go again before they lowered the casket, one more plea when the bobcat came with the cement grave cover...

...but even when they brought in the backhoe to push the dirt in - 30 people were there to make sure it got done right and with respect. Respect for the woman who we all owed our existence to, who held our family together.

Thank you for your 'gift' of words.
